Cancer from Soda?
DA finds Benzene levels rising in soda
An interesting story caught my eye today. Apparently a cancer causing agent that is found in soda has increased in dosage over the last decade. When first discovered the beverage companies told the government that they would handle it. Wow, thanks for looking out for us. Fifteen years later the cancer causing chemicle is turning up again. teh FDA has found levels in some soft drinks higher than it was in 1990. Which is 2 to 4 times higher than whats in drinking water. considered safe for drinking water. Statements made about benzene have that the higher traces are not found in major brands and found in a very small number of products. Well, why not reduce the higher level? I guess you can ingest more benzene with breathing than drinking a soda. So what is benzene? It is a industrial chemica found in tobacco smoke, paint, car exhaust, and detergents. Exposure can cause leukemia and other cancers of the blood. Benzene can be found in soda when two ingredients interact, Vitamin C, and Sodium Benzoate or Potassim Benzoate. The benzoates are used to prevent bacteria. Now just because these two things are present doesn’t mean that benzene will be present. A catalyst is needed, such as temperature or light. So its kind of a dicey situation hopefully a current investigation will clean up this problem.

I think people are overreacting to this a little. I read that the amount of benzene that has been linked to cancer is an absolutely huge amount…That you’d have to have tons and tons and tons of soda a day in order for the benzene level to be close to those they’ve tested. In my opinion, drinking soft drinks with benzene in them in moderation is fine - I really don’t think it will hurt you.

I guess the previous comment is pbeing proved invalid by last nights news broadcast. It is now becoming a major concern. Why would we continue to consume these things that are harmful. Not only are they canaer causing but there is the carbonation that are not good for the sphintor muscles, and the high sugar content that is not good for the body in general.
