Shortage of Organic Food?

All organic foods are on the rise.  Orgainic food still represents a small portion of the nation’s food market (about 2.5%) but its growing popularity is causing to inflate at an incredible rate. Organic means that food is grown without fertilizer, hormones, biotechnology, or bug killer
Organic food has  grown in sales by 15-20% each year.  Mainstream supermarkets are jumping on the trend.  Kroger, Safeway, and others are even selling their own organic foods.  Wal-Mart plans to double its organic food supply.

Organic farms are on the rise also.  Around 10,000+ are in existence as of now.  This number is still not enough for the growing trend.  Organic companies are having to look outside the US for products.  So, if a company needs a large amount of an organic ingredient it is usually already spoken for with the U.S.  So right now we are importing more organic ingredients than we are exporting.

Organic companies are working to increase U.S. organic farms.  Offering money to switch to organic production.  The are currently spending around $2 million on expected help for 2006

Let’s just hope that we dont exhaust the world’s supply of organic food as the trend catches on.  Organic food already is more expensive than its counterpart.  The more exporting the U.S. does the more the price will grow.
