Food News From the Year 2006

Filed under: Health News, Dieting Trends — EatingToLive @ 11:25 am

Well, 2006 has certainly been an interesting year when it comes to food news and nutrition news. So let’s dive right in with this article I recently wrote for publication about 2006 “The Year of Food”. Just a few of the news items that come to my mind in this arena are the fact that cloned foods have been approved by the FDA, and the ever so controversial trans fat ban that has been a raging debate for much of 2006, and may likely continue into 2007.

Probably the most interesting and even kind of spooky development in food and nutrition, we saw the FDA approval of cloned foods go through just a few days ago, right before the new year 2007. I was confused about this one, weren’t we just debating the morality and feasability of cloning not too long ago? And now we’ve had one of the most notoriously picky organizations, the FDA, approve cloned foods, including animal foods like pork, beef and chicken? Well, yes, it wasn’t too long ago, and yes the FDA did approve foods from cloned animal to be available to the public.

Perhaps this was an issue of supply and demand, and was seen as a way to revolutionize the food supply, but I for one will be shopping more and more at my local natural foods store, where they only offer pure, unaltered meats and dairy, and are guaranteed to be of an “original” gene pool.

There just seems to be something about eating cloned food that is “wrong”. Isn’t there somewhere down the line when these cloned animals and their byproducts may be found to cause some sort of health issue in the creatures that consume them (us?).

To me, the concept of cloned food seems almost too futuristic, even for this day and age, and I’d like to see more long term studies done on the implications of cloned food consumption. But hey, rumor has it, KFC has been using cloned chickens for their notoriously savory chicken for years, so it must be fine, right?

Further down the line, after we start seeing so many foods in the store that may or may not be from a cloned animal, many are also speculating that this will lead to new food labeling, like the certified Organic labels that now must be placed on foods that have passed certain organic guidelines.

Many companies such as Ben and Jerry’s ice creams want to make it clear that their ice cream is only made from animal fat (dairy fat, that is), that is from non-cloned, grain fed animals without the use of hormones. There will very likely be many other food companies that want to distinguish themselves this way as well, as they know full well many Americans will not find the idea of eating cloned animal byproducts particularly savory.

2006 was also the year that we saw the first trans fat ban go into effect, and not without controversy, in New York City. Trans fats are a dangerous fat that have been used in cooking, especially in fast food restaurants, for years now.

Trans fats actually make food extremely tasty, and some argue, even addictive. They have been the subject of much dire warning from the health community, to consume trans fats in extreme moderation, or even better, not at all. Trans fats really do not have one speck of nutritional value, and in fact can just be called a pure health hazard.

Trans fats are actually a partially synthetic fat derivitive that was the brainchild of scientists who actually added hydrogen to vegetable oil in order to cheapen the process of fat production as well as increase taste and affordability. Hydrogenated oils also can greatly increase the shelf life of foods (I know, kind of scary).

They raise the bad cholesterol levels in the blood and have been implicated in the increasing levels of obesity and heart disease in this country also though, and there have been many lobbyists campaigning for their elimination and outlaw for a while.

They did partially succeed, as in a bid for an increase in overall health awareness, many politicians took it upon themselves to institute trans fat bans. Now, many fast food restaurants are currently making the switch over to healthier fats that will not clog arteries as readily and are not so highly addictive in nature.

Some agree with government intervention in the health and well being of American citizens, while some disagree and believe this is undue government intervention, and that education should be used instead of seemingly intrusive laws.

I for one, am on the fence on this one. While I believe it is our right to choose the foods we eat, I also know the dangers of trans fats, and recognize that not everyone has the knowledge or willpower they need to avoid these types of foods, which by the way, also happen to be cheaper and easily accessible to a wide range of the population.

One thing is for sure, 2006 has seen some pretty cool and interesting changes in the food and the nutrition sector, and 2007 may just bring some more interesting developments as the debate over nutrition continues to be a hot subject.

Why I Love Elliptical Machines

Filed under: Exercise Equipment — EatingToLive @ 11:29 am

Elliptical machines are one of the best workout machines that I think has ever been invented. Why? Well, because the elliptical machine is perfect for people who have a hard time exercising because they have tender joints or tend to get trauma-type injuries when working out at high impact for their cardio workout. The elliptical gives you a “high impact” workout as far as it goes for the cardio aspect, and yet it is gentle on the joints, and creates a fluid motion which feels good and is good for the muscle tone and the body in general.

Not only that, as a woman I really appreciate the elliptical’s ability to create a nice muscle tone without creating too much bulk like running or sitting on a bike, which can bulk up your quadricepts very quickly. See home exercise equipment reviews for links to reviews on elliptical machines and other popular exercise equipment.

Ellipticals were essentially the brainchild of fitness experts who recognized a need for a machine that would provide an aerobically high impact workout without being rough on the body, and while also simultaneously sculpting muscle tone. The first elliptical-like machine I guess would be the Nordictrack, which I personally always found a little clumsy to operate (I’m not the most graceful person, but still!).

The Noridctrack was a cross county ski emulating machine which also had arm handles to get a nice arm workout in while doing a cross country ski-like motion. They were a little hard to get going as I recall, but they basically worked on the same premise as an elliptical machine. For reviews see elliptical machine reviews

Anorexia in Brazil Drawing Attention

Filed under: Dieting Trends — EatingToLive @ 8:12 am

You’d think that the number one most beauty-focused country would be us here in the US, who seems to be body-obsessed, and has more and more plastic surgery every year it seems to keep up this beauty ideal. But, many are surprised to learn that Brazil has placed a very high priority on physical beauty, to a point of danger for it’s young women, and more and more women are dying and succumbing to the temptations of starving themselves.

Anorexia drew national attention when a successful Brazilian model died in her early twenties from the disease, and she only weighed about 88 pounds when she died, of infection related directly to malnourishment caused by this body ravaging disease. Now, three other deaths have followed of young women emaciated by anorexia or a combination of anorexia and bulimia (binging and purging), and officials are starting to realize that they may need to put some restrictions on the fashion industry which influences so many trends, and tends to put a high price on pencil thin models whom young girls strive to look like.

Most of the women stricken with the disease where you are literally terrified of gaining weight, and skip meals and eat very little when you do eat, therefore becoming too thin, and often too weak to even go about daily life in its most severe cases. Bulimia is also common, where young women, in order to control the amount of weight they gain or perceivably lose the weight they may put on by eating certain foods, binge (eat a lot), then purge either through the use of laxatives or through vomiting.

They also may try herbal weight loss pills and even pharmaceutical diet pills, in a serial fashion in order to control what they percieve as out of control eating behavior, which they themselves cannot seem to help.

Bulimia is often characterized by a normal weight, but someone who eats a lot more than they should for weighing as much as they do. Many times this disease can have devastating effects on the esophagus, which gets worn away from stomach acids, the teeth may rot early, and there may not be enough bile in their digestive system since they are constantly throwing it up. Also, bulimics tend to dress in oversized clothes and tend to have “closeted” eating habits.

Holidays are Over, Time to Get Back on Track!

Filed under: Weight Loss, Diet and Weightloss News — EatingToLive @ 12:04 pm

Ok, so the holidays are over, and I don’t know about you, but I’ve definitely put a few pounds on. Maybe no more than like 5 lbs, but when you’re only five foot four, five pounds can make a world of difference (try one whole pants size!) So, to get back on track I’ve made sure I have a steady resolve and some of the best herbal diet supplements on my side, so that my appetite won’t be affected by all the abuse I’ve subjected it to during these holiday months.

I notice that my appetite today, the day after Christmas, is already less, and I think that is a psychological thing, since I know that party time is over and it’s time to get serious again about my eating habits.

My workouts didn’t suffer as much as my eating habits. I actually still made sure I got to the gym, but when you are eating too much, working out simply doesn’t reverse all that damage, unless you are working out twice a days for two hours! So, everyone, good luck at getting back on track, I know it’s difficult after a few weeks of throwing caution to the wind, but we should all be able to do it!

Zilch Sugar Free Margarita Mix : Excellent!

Filed under: Low Cal Ideas — EatingToLive @ 11:16 pm

I was sort of obsessing over buying sugar free cocktail drink mixes a couple weeks ago, if you happened to see the post, and I came across one on the web called “Zilch” sugar free margarita mixers.  This drink mix that makes margaritas with zero calories, got rave reviews on the website, but as with everything else, I remained a skeptic until now.

I got them in the mail a few weeks ago.  The only complaint I have is the slow shipping, but wow, I’m really glad I ordered. them.  The zilch sugar free margarita mixers come in tiny little foil envelopes that contain a tiny bit of powder that you would think couldn’t possibly flavor an entire standard sized margarita, and yet, somehow, they do.

The Zilch mixers flavor a whole lot of tart and tangy flavor into your margarita, and yet you don’t feel sugar bombed after you drink one, rather you feel as you should, pleasantly buzzed :)

The only thing I will say about this sugar free margarita mix is that it does leave a residue of tartness on your tongue and in your mouth, but I have this complaint with regular margaritas also.  I’d be willing to be someone may not even be able to tell the difference between these and a regular, sugar-loaded margarita.

The folks over at zilch really came up with a good thing here, and they’re reasonably priced also.  I added a little extra pizaaz to mine by putting a twist of lime in them also.  Very good!

Phentermine : What is It?

Filed under: Prescription Diet Aids — EatingToLive @ 6:30 pm

Phentermine is a pharmaceutical weight loss drug that gained recognition, both good and bad, when it was part of the duo Phen Fen, which eventually was banned from the pharamceutical market place after people who were using the pharmaceutical combo drug had very serious side effects, even resulting in death in some cases.

Phentermine, the prescription kind, is an appetite suppressant in potent form.  While it is true that many people have lost a lot of weight on phentermine, it is not without its side effects and downsides.  The  manufacturers of phentermine are cautious to say that their diet product will help you, but you must also watch what you eat and exercise, so it is by no means looked at my consumers as a “miracle weight loss pill” where you do not have to do any work.

Phentermine is only approved for the short term treatment of obesity and weight loss, which means patients can only be put on phentermine by a physician for a maximum of about anywhere for 6-12 weeks, depending on the patient.

The drug is primarily known to suppress the appetite, but the downside to many drugs that do this is that they significantly elevate the heart rate in some cases, which can lead to problems, like dizziness, dry mouth, blurred vision and other side effects that are often related to taking this type of product which can kind of “speed” the whole system up.

This is exactly why phentermine is probably only FDA approved for short term use, because long term use may very well damage the system or possibly even organs (no long term study has been done though, because phentermine is only approved for short term use for obesity).

If you’re looking for a safe alternative to phentermine, there are herbal phentermines out there that accomplish the same appetite suppression, without the side effects and danger of a hard pharmaceutical drug.

See herbal phentermine review for more information on one such supplement which curbs appetite.  It’s the perfect thing to get you back on track after getting far off track (like I often do) from the holiday binge season!

Low Fat Hot Chocolate

Filed under: Low Cal Ideas — EatingToLive @ 10:28 pm

I created a new favorite of mine for the holiday season, with way less guilt than the regular stuff.  Hot chocolate is one of the favorite “cozy” season treats.  Who doesn’t love a good cup of steaming hot cocoa, sitting in front of a fireplace, melting all your cares away.  Two good things about this easy recipe for low fat/low sugar hot chocolate I’m about to share with you.

1.)  It’s hot so it actually helps you feel full and satiated.

2.)  It’s made with pure cocoa, so you get the benefits of real, pure cocoa (antioxidants) without all the sugar and fat, which is actually what kind of counters the goodness in chocolate.

Here’s how to make it.  It’s really easy, so if you blink you may miss it!

First, take fat free skim milk, heat it on the stove or in the microwave until it’s steaming.  Don’t overdo it or you may scald the milk.  Then, take a heaping tablespoon full of pure, unsweetened cocoa powder (I used Toll House brand, but I’m sure you could find a natural or organic brand as well that’s a little less processed), dump it in your steaming milk.

Then, take about a half teaspoon or a full packet of Stevia, my favorite sweetener (read more on this later).  Swirl it all together and you’ve got one darn good cup of lowfat, guilt free, sugarless hot cocoa!  If you want to get really fancy, add some lowfat cool whip to the top, or use fat free.  Delish!

Proactol : Exciting New Fat Binder?

Filed under: Weight Loss, Dietary Supplements, Diet and Weightloss News — EatingToLive @ 12:56 pm

I have a little exciting information on a product that is not quite ready to be released to market, but with any luck, will soon be - and it’ll be available over the counter, without a prescription because it is safe and needs minimal supervision, which makes it even more appealing.

It’s called Proactol as of now, and will soon be released so I can give you a full assessment of the product which is supposed to bind to fat and make you lose weight a lot more quickly and effectively than if you were not on the supplement.

I may even order some of this Proactol stuff for myself after the holidays if it’s out by then, so I can shed those inevitable cookies and candy and chocolate pounds with more ease!

Ab Work with a Medicine Ball?

Filed under: Exercise Equipment, Health & Fitness Tips — EatingToLive @ 1:34 pm

I was working out in the gym where I work the other day, and a fitness instructor that had just finished up a class in the room I was doing my floor work in showed me a new method to help sculpt my abs.  It didn’t involve any fitness equipment like a big ol’ treadmill, besides a small ball, so it would not take up a lot of space if you chose to buy one or try it out.

I think I like it too, because unlike my fairly routine way of doing crunches and modified crunches (you can only do so much with the belly after they all become some kind of crunch), I actually felt this one the next day.

She said to grab one of the robber covered medicine balls in the basket, and put it between my knees when I was doing crunches. I thought, how different could this be? But when I did it, I actually felt a lot of resistance in my lower ab area, an area that I often find very hard to isolate in my ab workouts.

I did about twenty crunches with the medicine ball between my knees and boy did I feel them in my lower abs! I would recommend this one, it’s a simple twist on the traditional ab crunch, but it really made my belly feel the burn. I would imagine you could also use an ordinary rubber ball - the size of a soccer ball - to accomplish the same effect on the isolation.

Slipping Off the Dieting Wagon : The Domino Effect

Filed under: Dieting Trends — EatingToLive @ 7:29 pm

I think just by reading the title of this, you know exactly what I’m going to talk about. And it’s happened to all of us at least a couple times in our life, unless you are one of the lucky few (very few I might add), who have never ventured to go on a diet. I think my mother may actually be one of those lucky few who never worried about her weight!

The domino effect of falling off the diet wagon is when you are actually either dieting or just watching what you eat, when a little slip up like a huge buffet loaded with potatoes, sweets, fatty meats and other no-no’s leads to a downfall for a few days, where your body can’t seem to get enough of those nasty but tasty naughty foods like pizza, mexican food, pies, cakes, cookies, and the list goes on and on! This is actually quite a common phenomena, and there are psychological and physiological reasons for this rebelling of the mind and body.

Experts have been known to say that this is due to the mentality of dieting. Dieting people often set out on a certain diet, or just a period of watching what they eat with a lot of excitement and anticipation for their new and improved body, self control and feeling better. This is how we all start out on a diet, right? As if it is sort of a new beginning to our lives.

But then after our first slip up, which often occurs fairly soon into a diet, that enthusiasm takes a dive, and we start to think of each slip up as our “last indulgence”, and that we can just start over again the next day, and then, for sure we will be good! This mentality is not uncommon, and it is actually what often leads to diet addiction, weight loss pills experimentation and yo yo dieting, which can do more harm than good not only on our bodies, but on our spirit as well.

Dieting like this not only damages our body by leading it on a wild roller coaster of healthful eating and bowel clogging, heart unhealthy eating, but it also is damaging to our self esteem and our inherent enjoyment in life. It leads to cycles of guilt and even shame and hiding things, and this can even lead to eating disorders like bulimia or binge eating and then starving.

There is a middle ground, but I think we must first come to a place of self acceptance, and love ourselves enough to indulge once in a while, but know when to stop the indulgence so we can eat healthfully the majority of the time and keep a regular exercise program to help offset those little indulgences. That’s all we can ask for, right?
