Energy Drink Abuse?
I could easily see how these high powered, ultra caffeinated “energy drinks” are becoming more and more of a popular thing, and are admittedly addictive to many people, including myself, who went through a Diet Red Bull drink splurge for a while a couple years ago when the drink first came out.
The problem is, a lot of teens are drinking these energy drinks obsessively and excessively, to burn the midnight oil so to speak, and to stay awake when they have to during the day, some even say to curb their appetite they like to drink energy drinks in excess.
One Colorado high school has gone so far as to actually ban a particular highly caffeinated energy drink after it received student complaints that the drink was making them feel shaky and made their hearts seem to race. This certainly sounds anything but healthy, and it is commendable that the high school has taken the proper steps to protect the health of its students.
Many energy drinks like this that contain outrageous amounts of stimulants claim that their target market is not intended to be high school or middle school aged students, because of the high amounts of stimulants and potentially “not fun” side effects they can have on younger, more susceptible systems, but the fact is this is the exact age, along with college, that these types of products appeal to the most.
