Acai Pure and Colo Pure Sued for Free Trials

Two products that have been distributed under the guise of giving free trials, and yet charge people’s credit cards and make it very difficult to stop the automatic orders from going through, has been sued by the FTC for making false claims and misleading consumers about a free trial when in fact they ended up paying for it.

The FTC received multiple complaints about the company after people tried to stop or return the product.  The products are marketed as potent antioxidants that help to purge the body of toxicity and help you to lose weight through purging the body of these toxins.  They also apparently used the names of Oprah Winfrey and Rachael Ray without the star’s permission.

A federal judge froze the company’s assets pending further investigation. Tests show that both products were nothing more than expensive laxatives.  Customers may have felt like they were losing weight because they were going to the bathroom all the time, but apparently it didn’t work all that well even for that.

Many diet products use acai in their name because it’s now such a popular antioxidant and has been touted as having excellent free radical eliminating potential, helping your body to fight everything from cancer and illness to help you maintain a healthy weight. There has never been any definitive research showing the acai is anything more than a healthy antioxidant though.  There is really no evidence showing that it helps people lose weight, so it’s perplexing that it is marketed this way so often.

It’s a huge fad, and there are always bound to be several diet products that spawn off of any new health food or superfood. The problem with the types of diet pills that use laxatives as a means to make people feel like they’re losing weight is that they can be very dangerous over time. Your body can develop a dependency on laxatives if you take them for a long period of time.

Your intestine’s own perestaltic action, by which it moves along waste down to the colon to be removed from the body, becomes “lazy” so to speak, and it can actually cause you to have issues with your bowels after a while.  Also, laxatives can cause an electrolyte imbalance since they rid the body of too much water sometimes and throw it into an imbalance.
