Losing weight is a national obsession. Diets, supplements, tips, meals – the market for products to help you lose weight is enormous and contains just about every kind of product you can possibly imagine. There are appetite suppressants, carb blockers, fat burners, menu plans, full meals, supplements to help you lose weight, reduce weight and keep weight off permanently.

Among the hottest topics on the weight loss circuit are fat blockers like the clinically proven fat absorber and weight reduction suppelment called Proactol (see Proactol reviews for a full scoop) and carb blockers – products that claim they can rev up your body’s metabolism to burn fat faster so that you reduce the fat cells in your body. Less fat cells means less places to store those extra calories, and a leaner, meaner you. Do fat burners work, and if so how?

The Theory Behind Fat Burners

Some ads promise to ‘turn your body into a fat burning machine’. They tell you that a particular product will ‘turn up the heat’ in your body’s furnace so that your body literally becomes a high-powered fat burning machine that melts pounds and fat away.  Fat burning is usually a primary goal of herbal weight loss pills.

When you eat food, your body converts the calories in food to energy by breaking food down bit by bit until it has usable amino acids to burn. If you eat more calories than your body needs right now, it will convert those acids into fatty acids and store them in your body in fatty cells.

If you eat more calories than your body needs right now, it will convert those acids into fatty acids and store them in your body in fatty cells. When you need more fuel than you supply your body in the food that you eat, it will begin to break down those fatty cells and extract the nutrients stored in them. This entire process is called ‘metabolism’, and the rate at which your body burns nutrients is called its metabolic rate.

Obviously, if your body burns through the food you eat faster, it will start releasing fat from its cells sooner. Many fat burners work by raising your metabolic rate so that your body releases stored fat at a higher rate. This is one of the reasons that caffeine and other stimulants can help you lose weight – they raise your metabolism rate.

There are other products that raise your metabolic rate as well. They work by stimulating your body to produce more of the chemicals that unlock fat from your body cells. Many of these are natural substances that work alone or in combination with other ingredients to raise the temperature of your body’s inner furnace. Some of the ingredients that have been shown to increase your metabolic rate include:

Ephedra

Ephedra, also known as ma huang, is a substance that occurs naturally in many plants. It has a stimulant effect on your body, increasing the rate at which your body burns calories and energy. It does this by stimulating your body to produce norepinephrine, a natural chemical that triggers the release of fatty acids from your cells.

Currently, supplements containing ephedra are banned from sale in the U.S.

Chromium picolinate

Chromium has been used in weight loss supplements for years, but it’s only recently that its fat-burning properties are being explored. Chromium helps stabilize insulin in the blood, and helps block the conversion of blood sugar into fat.

L-carnitine

L-carnitine is an amino acid that helps the liver retain glycogen, utilizing fats more efficiently and preventing them from being stored as fat. It functions as a transporter, binding to fatty acids and moving them into the body’s cells where they can be utilized for energy.

Pyruvate

Pyruvate is a substance that helps the body modulate its use of fatty acids. Research shows that it increases the amount of fat burned by the body during exercise without affecting muscle tissue.

HCA

HCA (hydroxicitric acid) is an acid similar to the citric acid found in oranges, grapefruits and other citrus fruits, but with remarkably different properties. Extracted from the garcinia cambogia, research has shown that HCA inhibits the enzymes that convert excess glucose to fat. In at least one study, dieters who took HCA three times a day lost 68% more weight, reported feeling hungry less often (as is with a product how hoodia gordonii works) and decreased their fat profiles considerably.
