Is Cinnamon Really a Natural Appetite Suppressant?
I may have written about this before because I’m very interested in anything that claims to be a natural appetite suppressant since my own appetite tends to go awry quite often (I chock it up to hormone swings), so when I heard that cinnamon may be a natural appetite suppressant, naturally I tried it pretty quickly. Well, that and the fact that I had tons of cinnamon in my cupboard that was unused since I rarely cook with it, made this test pretty easy. I’m writing this now because I tried it again just now since it’s only a little after eleven o’clock and I’m already starving for lunch.
While I think there are some merits to the idea that cinnamon the spice is a natural appetite suppressant, it’s definitely only a weak one at best. I can see how eating something slightly spicy may actually make you forget you’re hungry, but i think you have to eat it plain, and eat at least 1/4 teaspoon of it, which may be hard since it’s dry. It would have to be accompanied by lots of water so you don’t choke on it or it doesn’t inadvertently fly down the wrong pathways in your throat area (such as your nose, how unpleasant).
There are many foods that nutritionists claim have a natural slightly appetite suppressing quality, one of them being cinnamon, and another being foods that contain natural caffeine like coffee and tea, but sometimes I find it’s contrary with drinks like that and while they may temporarily satisfy my hunger, they almost always make my hunger go into high gear after that.
Another natural appetite suppressant talked about is cayenne pepper. Because foods that are made with ground cayenne are so very spicy, this is said to trigger fullness. Not to mention you just can’t eat a ton of spicy food to begin with, so I’m not sure whether this spice is really actually an appetite suppressant in itself or whether it’s just the fact you can’t eat a whole lot of it that makes it beneficial to the diet. Some claim that cayenne helps speed the metabolism, but I’ll believe that when I see an actual study on it since I don’t believe this one has ever been undoubtedly proven.
